Striking renovation in Malmö with Argeton façade panels

Product type Tampa and Lineo | Värnhemstorget, Malmö

On Värnhemstorget in Malmö there is a twelve-storey residential building. As the building stands out from the neighbouring buildings due to its size, the twelve-storey building has become a well-known silhouette in the city. This is a façade renovation, which was general contracting through Morneon Fasad AB, for which Argeton supplied façade panels with a unique glaze.

Värnhemstorget is one of the most important traffic junctions in Malmö, which many people cross every day by car, bus, bicycle or on foot, and what hardly anyone overlooks is the 12-storey building that clearly stands out from its surroundings.

The high-rise building, which belongs to Häggen, has been extensively renovated. Along the square, the building has 12 floors and houses both residential and commercial spaces. Since 2012, Morneon Fasad AB has been working to find technical and architectural solutions that meet the wishes of the community, and in the summer of 2020 the project was launched. The new and improved façade has now been clad with Argeton façade panell, which has been finished in a unique glaze developed especially for this project.

Unique glazed façade panel

Over the 18 months that the project ran, the roof was replaced, the existing façade was demolished down to the frame and additional insulation was added. Then a new façade and new windows were installed, with the new façade having larger windows and being clad with Argeton exposed brick from Wienerberger. Frej Josefsson, CEO of Morneon Fasad AB, explains: Argeton's privacy tiles met the requirements and conditions we needed to obtain a building permit. Once we had established that we had found the right shape of tile, it was all about the colours. We had a sample wall with different unique glazes for the project, which we showed to the municipality. Based on that, we moved forward with the project and updated the building permit documents with the applications that were made.

He continues: Throughout the process we followed the Boverket rules of practicality, which means we renovated with care and maintained the architectural qualities of the original house. Therefore, we have chosen colours and textures that reflect the former look of the house and fit into the existing environment.

The ceramic tiles are manufactured near Dresden in Germany and have project-specific glazes. The choice fell on the Argeton products Tampa and Lineo by in the colour salmon/pastel red.

Ceramic tiles with an accuracy of 0.10 mm

What is also special about the selected façade tile is that it is designed and executed with an accuracy of one tenth of a millimetre.

Frej Josefsson explains: Several unique extrusion tools have been developed to obtain the exact heights of the ceramic panel. The accuracy of this project is extreme, as the special moulds have an accuracy of one tenth of a millimetre. So all the ceramic tiles we used were ordered with this accuracy, ensuring that the ceramic tiles fit exactly as they should by measuring and fitting the substructure precisely. An exciting material for the façade Morneon Fasad has been talking to people in the area, and so far the comments have been overwhelmingly positive.

Frej Josefsson tells us about it: It's always nice to get good feedback. Especially for a large building like this, which is almost absurdly large compared to its surroundings. It's a special building and a challenge to work with, but that's why it's especially nice to hear that people are happy with the result.

He continues: As a project manager, I think Argeton delivers exciting facades and we will definitely work with them again. The great thing about Argeton is also the possibilities that come with the special glazes. Overall, we think the collaboration has worked well and we look forward to the next project with Argeton.
